The Emacs Editor

Although Emacs is not part of SVR4 or Solaris, this editor is found on many Unix systems as it is a popular alternative to Vi.
Emacs is a modeless screen editor.
To start an Emacs session, type:
emacs filename
The following tables list some ESSENTIAL, FILE-HANDLING, CURSOR-MOVEMENT and DELETION Emacs commands. Emacs commands use the Control key and the Meta key (The Meta key is usually the escape key). For this page I will be representing the Control key with C-, and the Meta key with M-.

C-h	Enter the online help system
C-x C-s	Save the file
C-x C-c	Exit Emacs
C-x u	undo last edit (can be repeated)
C-g	Get out of current command operation
C-p	Up 1 line
C-n	Down 1 line
C-f	Forward 1 character
C-b	Back 1 character
C-v	Forward 1 screen
M-v	Back 1 screen
C-s	Search forward for characters
C-r	Search backward for characters
C-d	Delete next character
Del	Delete previous character

C-x C-f	Find file and read it
C-x i	Insert file at cursor position
C-x C-s	Save file
C-x C-w	Write buffer contents to file
C-x C-c	Save and exit
C-z	Suspend emacs

Del	Delete previous character
C-d	Delete current character (under cursor)
M-Del	Delete previous word
M-d	Delete current word
C-k	Delete from cursor to end of line
M-k	Delete whole of current line
C-y	Restore what you have just deleted.
C-w	Delete selected region
